Sea Mar Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program
WIC is a supplemental food and nutrition/ breastfeeding education program that helps pregnant women, new mothers and young children eat well, learn about nutrition and breastfeeding and stay healthy.
We provide nutrition and breastfeeding counseling, money for nutritious foods, and assistance with referrals to needed services to low-income women, infants and children through the Special Supplemental Food Program popularly known as WIC. We weigh and measure clients and do a hemoglobin test to check iron status. We have lots of written information in English, Spanish, and Russian. For breastfeeding moms, we have breast pumps that we can loan them while they are breastfeeding. Depending upon the situation, we can give them a manual pump or electric pump.
Eligibility requirements for Patients/Clients Washington WIC clients must be a pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding woman, an infant or a child up to 5 years old. They must be low-income (defined by less than 185% of the Federal Poverty Level), live in Washington State, and have a medical or nutrition risk factor as determined by a Certification Evaluation in the office.
WIC is free to all who qualify and is a voluntary service. Patients either call or come to the office for an appointment. We gather some basic information over the phone to determine if they qualify financially. We then schedule an appointment for them.
WIC is not an emergency food service; we provide only supplemental food. The foods that clients are able to get are limited and the amounts are based upon if they are a woman or a child.
